Gold Testing
Acids for determining (8k,
10k, 12k, 14k) gold karat values
To successfully complete the steps to
determine gold karat values, it is necessary to have:
Gold testing needles
Gold testing acids
Testing stones
First step: The testing stone to use has
to be thoroughly cleaned with
test acid neutralizers. Using water to wash the testing stones is not
as accurate.
Second step: Scratch the gold piece, which
needs to be tested, on the
testing stone.
Third step: Next to the place where the
gold piece was rubbed, scratch
the suitable testing needle (8k, 10k, 12k, 14k).
Fourth step: Place a drop of the matching
testing acid (8k, 10k, 12k,
14k) on the testing stone where the gold was scratched.
Reading the results: If the color of the
scratch spot for the gold
piece turns out to be the same as the color left from the mark of the
testing needle, then the gold tested has the same karat or higher. If
the color becomes faded and eventually disappears, then the gold piece
has a lower karat value.
